THE ISIS LEGAL CENTRE FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN

“Everyone is equal before the law and has the right to equal protection and benefit of the law”
Section 9(1) The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996

It is my experience that women and children in South Africa, especially those living in rural areas, are unable to access the right provided by Section 9(1) of our Constitution.  Through a lack of education and money they are unable to enjoy the protection and benefit of the law.

We  started an organisation called the “Isis Legal Centre for Women and Children” that endeavors to empower individual women and children through a holistic program of free legal representation and education.

The Isis Legal Centre   not only assist individuals, but  identify cases where groups of women and / or children are unable to access their rights and where there is a possible legal solution to the problem.  In such cases the Isis Legal Centre will institute legal action to assist that group.

Isis is currently involved in two projects that may have a positive impact on many other women and children.

Firstly Isis is assisting a child victim of sexual abuse to obtain the right to have her own legal representation during the trial to protect her right to dignity and privacy in so far as the system is failing to do so.
Secondly Isis is involved in an application currently before the Constitutional Court dealing with the manner in which the banks take and  execute judgments against unsophisticated clients. In fact judgment has just been granted in our favor.

Isis is a registered i.t.o. the Non-Profit Organizations ( Act no 71 of 1997). The reg no is 045-924-NPO

. The trustees are Anna-Marie de Vos, a retired Judge,  currently practicing law in the Garden Route, Tessa de Kock, a retired advocate and business women and Elearnore Bouw, the current Mayor of Knysna with a keen interest in women’s issues.

In order for Isis to continue assisting those with no other recourse to the law funding is vital. Any donation will be accounted for to the Director of Non-Profit Organisations and also to the donor, if so requested.
